Notes from the Trail
By Dane Hanna
July was a productive but hot month for trail
maintenance. I have been spending a lot of time at
Fort Jackson, which is a passage that can really
surprise you. Close to Columbia and parallel to
Leesburg Rd, it offers some nice views and the feel
of a very remote area. Thanks to everyone that came
out for the workday on July 31.
I am also gearing up for this fall to get a lot of
work done while enjoying cooler days on the
trail. Mark your calendars for Sept 25 for National
Public Lands Day where we will rebuild a footbridge
on the Swamp Fox Passage in Francis Marion National
Forest. Keep an eye open for some more workdays.
We also had two amazing paddle trips. Out in the
Cypress trees in Sparkleberry Swamp, we had lunch on
a floating house with the biggest group of PCF
paddlers to date. On Cedar Creek in Congaree
National Park, we peacefully floated along the creek
beside the ruts of wilds hogs. It has been a blast
paddling in different places.
We are currently looking for trail adopters for the
Lowcountry passages of the Palmetto Trail. We are
proud to announce that
Dwight and Susan
Dwyer are our first adopters. They will keep
an eye on approximately 5 miles of the Wateree
Passage several times a year, and we will work
together on maintaining and promoting it. Thanks
Dwight and Susan! If you are interested in becoming
an adopter, send an email to
